Become an underwater litter picker and help clean up our oceans.
Help us to tackle marine pollution – get together with your club or diving friends and organise a BSAC underwater litter pick or commit to retrieve any litter you find every time you dive.
Our BSAC underwater litter pick resources will help you get started.
The plastic pollution crisis
Plastic and marine litter pollution is threatening the health of our seas and oceans, largely as a result of our increasing reliance on non-essential single-use plastics, destructive fishing practices and damaging waste disposal methods.
But, by becoming an BSAC underwater litter picker, you can help turn the tide on marine pollution – every time you dive.
Did you know...
-
Plastic waste is entering the ocean at an alarming rate of about 11 million metric tons a year.
-
Over 220 million tons of plastic is produced globally every year.
-
Plastic debris kills more than 1 million seabirds every year and 100,000 marine mammals.
-
80% of litter on our beaches has made its way there from our parks, rivers and streets far from the coast.
-
Marine protected areas with vulnerable marine life are exposed to as much litter as unprotected sites.
How you can make a difference
By embracing the BSAC underwater litter pick ethos, you can stem the flow of litter that is damaging our oceans and protect the marine environment we love to explore.
Whether you choose to organise a specific underwater litter pick event, incorporate regular underwater litter picks as part of your club’s diving programme or litter pick on every dive, every piece of marine litter you retrieve will make a difference.
Remember – it is these small positive actions when you dive that can make waves of change for the marine environment.
