The BSAC Divesoft Liberty CCR course is your first step (MOD1) into the silent world of rebreather diving, and this will lead you into a new world of diving experiences.

The BSAC MOD 1 Divesoft Liberty CCR course teaches a qualified open-circuit diver to dive with a Divesoft Liberty rebreather. You will receive a thorough grounding in  generic rebreather technology, alongside all of the Liberty -specific training, you will learn how to adapt your existing diving skills to diving a rebreather, where you benefit from always breathing an optimum gas mix.

Originally a cave diving CCR, the Liberty’s resilience, as well as its attention to detail, proved persuasive to me... I say do not hesitate and get in touch with BSAC Technical straight away!

To enrol on the MOD 1 Divesoft Liberty CCR Diver course you must have successfully completed a BSAC Sports Diver course, or equivalent, with 35-metre depth certification. You also need to be an Accelerated Decompression Diver or Advanced Nitrox Diver, or have a recognised equivalent certification from another recognised training agency.

The BSAC MOD 1 Liberty CCR Diver course teaches a suitably qualified open-circuit diver to safely dive the Divesoft Liberty CCR.

You will get a thorough grounding in rebreather technology, and in-depth Liberty-specific training, you will learn how to adapt your existing diving skills to a way of diving where you benefit from always breathing a warm and optimum gas mix throughout the dive.

You will learn to safely dive the Divesoft Liberty closed-circuit rebreather. This will include decompression diving, and trimix gas planning, and you will learn all the skills and drills required to dive the Liberty and address all  possible situations. You can choose to dive with air as a diluent , but you will have been trained using 20/35 trimix as a diluent,  and when you use 20/35 this will allow you to dive to a  maximum depth of 45m, at the MOD 1 level of training.

The MOD 1 Liberty CCR Diver course includes nine theory sessions covering topics such the Liberty, physics and physiology, dive conduct and resolving  potential problems.

The dry practical sessions will cover assembly, preparing and maintaining the Liberty, including updating the control firmware and downloading dives from your Liberty, using the Divesoft PC and phone applications.

All the new skills will be introduced during the sheltered water training dives, including applying your current rescue skills to CCR diving: the sheltered water training is followed by seven open-water dives. This will ensure that you have the in-water experience to become competent and confident in all the skills, drills and discipline required to safely dive the Divesoft Liberty CCR.

Throughout the course, you will be working closely with your Liberty instructors to ensure you achieve all of the practical skills and the in-depth knowledge required to safely dive your Liberty CCR.

As a certified BSAC MOD 1 Liberty CCR Diver you will be competent to plan and conduct dives, including dives with mandatory decompression, while using the Divesoft Liberty rebreather. You will also be able to rescue another CCR or open circuit (OC) diver from depth.

On completing the course if you chose to use air as the diluent, then you can progressively build up to a maximum dive depth of 40m, if you chose to use trimix 20/35 as your diluent you can progressively build up maximum depth of 45m but only when using trimix 20/35 as the diluent.

If you are interested in taking the Divesoft Liberty CCR Diver course please contact BSAC Technical Liberty instructor Nick Jewson by emailing NickJJewson@aol.com or call +44 (0)7802 214141.

Not a BSAC member? You can do this course by joining BSAC directly or joining via a local club. Find a club.

Students will get the supporting learning materials at time of signing up for a course. You will need full open-water dive kit suitable for local conditions, a Divesoft Liberty CCR and the appropriate bailout cylinder. BSAC owns a Divesoft Liberty CCR which may be available for a student to hire for use on courses, subject to availability.

Your next steps – developing your skills

After completing a MOD 1 Divesoft Liberty CCR Diver course and consolidating your skills, your options for club diving significant expand.

  • When you have completed the Liberty course with 20/35 as the diluent gas, then you can dive to 45m, with reduced gas density and reduced narcosis that comes from using 20/35 trimix as the diluent.
