Do you want to find out more about the wrecks that you dive and their history?

BSAC’s Wreck Appreciation course is an excellent way to learn how to recognise and safely navigate the features of wrecks. The BSAC Wreck Appreciation course is recognised by the Nautical Archaeology Society.

The Wreck Appreciation course is the start of your journey to diving with a purpose and developing your own wreck projects. The course includes practical work on navigating safely around a wreck.

To enrol on the Wreck Appreciation course you must have already successfully completed a BSAC Ocean Diver course (or have equivalent certification from another recognised training agency).

On this two-day course you will learn how to find information on wreck sites and how to stay within the laws protecting wrecks. Practical work includes how to identify the major parts of a wreck and make basic site sketches, and learning about the additional equipment needed and techniques used for safer wreck diving, including working with reels and lines underwater.

The course consists of six theory sessions, two dry practical sessions and two open-water dives. With the help of experienced instructors you will be able to apply your new knowledge and techniques to safely navigate around a wreck and complete a small survey on the open-water dives.

The Wreck Appreciation course will put you in a better place to learn more about wrecks and what to do to protect them, and you’ll appreciate them as havens for marine life. You will be able to promote safe, responsible and enjoyable wreck diving in your club.

Full completion of the course entitles NAS members to claim five credits towards their NAS Certificate or Award. See the NAS website for further details.

Ocean Divers may claim accreditation towards their Sport Diver qualification for use of a distance line (part of SO3) and a delayed surface-marker buoy (part of SO4).

You could do this course at a regional event or local club. Not all clubs run Wreck Appreciation course courses, so please check if you are interested.

Or you could progress your diver grade training.

Thinking about becoming an instructor, or wanting to improve your instructing skills? The BSAC Instructor Training Scheme has a course for you.

You could sign up for BSAC’s Instructor Foundation Course (IFC) to become an Assistant Diving Instructor, or develop your existing skills as an Open Water Instructor and become a Marine Life Appreciation instructor.
