If you are interested in project diving, it won’t be long before you want to lift and shift something that you’ve found during a search of the seabed.
Where better to learn how to do this efficiently and safely than on BSAC’s Search and Recovery course?
The Search and Recovery course gives qualified divers hands-on experience of using reels, lines, weights, buoys, and containers and lifting bags of various shapes and sizes, alongside lifting strops and karabiners, to recover objects from the water.
To enrol on the Search and Recovery course you must have already successfully completed a Sports Diver course (or have equivalent certification from another recognised training agency).
You will learn the practical details of both search operations and recovery operations, including how to use buoyancy to move an object.
The two-day course consists of a mix of theory and practical sessions including a shotline construction workshop and how to carry out simple, controlled, staged, and multiple bag lifts. You’ll have plenty of time to practise the skills taught during the dry runs and project dives and will get plenty of feedback from course instructors.
At the end of the Search and Recovery course you will understand how to plan and execute an underwater search, and what to do to recover a lost object.
This Skill Development Course covers the DO4 part of BSAC Dive Leader training, which can be signed off when the SDC has been completed.
The dives carried out for the course can be counted as up to four qualifying dives for Dive Leader or up to three qualifying dives for Advanced Diver training.
You could do this course at a regional event or local club. Not all clubs run Search and Recovery courses, so please check if you are interested.

Students will be given a pack of supporting learning materials. For the practical sessions you will need full open-water diving kit including appropriate thermal protection for your local waters.
Your next steps – developing your skills
Equipped with the skills learned on this course you stand a good chance of being able to recover lost items underwater. By combining your searching knowledge with seamanship skills you will be able to find unknown and exciting sites to dive.
After this course you could develop specific skills to expand your interests further, whether you are a diving member or non-diving member. Imagine being qualified in diver first aid or becoming a boat handler. Check out the Skill Development Courses (SDCs) you can get involved in.
