The ocean is at the heart of what we do as divers and snorkellers, and we all have a role to play in protecting it. That’s why BSAC has teamed up with Motion for the Ocean – a powerful initiative helping local councils – both inland and at the coast – to take real action to improve the health of UK rivers and seas.

Now, with our brand-new Motion for the Ocean online toolkit, it’s easier than ever for everyone in the UK to get involved and make a difference!

Watch: Emily Cunningham on Motion for the Ocean

To mark the launch of the toolkit, we spoke with Emily Cunningham MBE, co-founder of Motion for the Ocean, to explain why this initiative matters and how divers and clubs can get involved. Watch the video below to hear more:

Why your voice matters

Local councils play a crucial role in protecting our rivers and seas – from tackling pollution to supporting marine conservation. But they need public support to take action. The Motion for the Ocean toolkit provides step-by-step guidance to help BSAC clubs, divers and snorkellers contact their councils, start conversations and encourage real change.

Katherine Knight, BSAC Chair of Environment and Sustainability said:

This is a fantastic initiative, Emily has made ‘thinking ocean’ accessible for councils across the country and this is already paying dividends with the strong uptake and commitment to support the Motion for the Ocean. Regardless of whether you live by the sea or inland, you can encourage your local council to bring the ocean into their conversations and decision making.

This is just the beginning. Together, we can drive real change and ensure the future of our ocean and rivers. Let’s make waves!

Emily CunninghamThank you from Motion for the Ocean Co-Founder, Emily Cunningham MBE:

As a proud BSAC member, I am delighted to see BSAC clubs and members supporting our Motion for the Ocean initiative. Thank you to each and every person that takes the time to write to their local councillor and encourage them to take action. Global impact starts with local action, and I can’t wait to see the ripples you all make.
