Want to help protect our waters and make a local impact? Join us at the Go Diving Show (1-2 March 2025) to discover how BSAC clubs and members can get involved in an exciting initiative - Motion for the Ocean - to bring about change to the UK’s seas and waterways.
The BSAC community is already hands-on when it comes to protecting our waters. From litter picks and marine surveys to seagrass restoration projects, our members and clubs are making a real difference. At HQ, we’re lobbying nationally as part of the Clean Water Sports Alliance, and now we’re going to take it a step further - by supporting our wider community to engage with their local council.
Through collaboration with an initiative called ‘Motion for the Ocean’, BSAC clubs, training centres, members and all UK divers will be supported to encourage their local councils to actively play their part in ocean conservation.
Co-founded by BSAC member and award-winning marine conservationist Emily Cunningham MBE, Motion for the Ocean is an initiative that empowers people to take action in their communities. 34 councils are already onboard, both coastal and inland, together representing over 4 million UK residents.

The Motion for the Ocean is not just for coastal areas! Everyone is connected to the sea, no matter where they live. Inland councils play a vital role in protecting waterways and raising awareness of how local actions impact ocean health.

BSAC CEO Mary Tetley said:
Our oceans are in crisis, but we think the BSAC community has the power to make a real difference. By supporting the Motion for the Ocean, we can turn passion into action — encouraging councils across the UK to commit to ocean recovery. Together, we can create lasting change for the health of our waters and the future of our planet.
