In recent years Pontefract Sub Aqua Club has faced the challenge of falling numbers and low energy. A change of approach has revived its fortunes.
Club members set out to reshape the club’s culture. The goal was simple: create a branch where people genuinely felt welcome, valued and involved. It has become the spark for a complete renewal.
A cultural reset that put members first
One of the most significant changes was the adoption of an open, member-led approach. New ideas are encouraged, listened to, and - most importantly - acted upon. Whether it’s training improvements, dive planning, kit purchases or social events, members can see their suggestions shaping the club around them.

This openness rebuilt trust almost overnight. Engagement grew, confidence returned, and the atmosphere on club nights transformed.
You can feel the difference on a Monday night — the energy is back.
New approach to scuba dive training in Pontefract
Training has always been central to the club’s mission, and the past year has seen Pontefract BSAC modernise and expand its programme. All training follows the latest BSAC standards, and divers at every level are supported with a structured, friendly and consistent approach.

Key developments include:
- Funding members to qualify as Assistant Instructors,
- Supporting progression through Ocean Diver, Sports Diver and now Dive Leader training,
- And forming a strong working partnership with Selby Sub-Aqua Club.
This collaboration with Selby has added real value. Joint training sessions, shared social events and a reciprocal pool arrangement give members greater flexibility and more opportunities to develop their skills.
In the last 14 months, the club has successfully trained 10 new divers, with more advancing into higher qualifications.

A club that feels like a community
Rebuilding Pontefract SAC has never been just about training. A thriving social life has helped restore the warmth and camaraderie that define a healthy branch.
Regular meals out, relaxed gatherings and dive trips - often including both divers and non-divers - have strengthened the sense of community. Family members frequently join events, contributing to the inclusive atmosphere the club now prides itself on.

The branch meets on alternate Monday evenings, and attendance is consistently strong, reflecting the enthusiasm and renewed sense of belonging among members.
We’re not just a dive club — we’re a community.
A remarkable turnaround
The progress of the past year speaks for itself:
- Membership has grown from 26 to 44 members (+69%),
- Female membership continues to rise,
- Training output is strong and consistent,
- Social activity has flourished,
- And the partnership with Selby SAC continues to deepen.
The transformation hasn’t been driven by any single person. It has come from a collective decision to build a club based on openness, inclusion and respect.

Looking ahead
Pontefract Sub Aqua Club has emerged from a difficult period with renewed purpose and a stronger identity. The branch is now thriving, confident and ready to continue growing.
With solid training pathways, an active social life and a culture where every member’s voice is heard, the club has moved far beyond its past struggles - and is well positioned for a bright and united future.
