BSAC Diving Officers from across the northwest attended a free Diving Officer Workshop on Tuesday 25 March in Chorley, Lancashire.

The event was organised by the North West regional coach, Stephen Dorricott and held at Chorley Fire Station.

Diving Officers of local branches in the area were invited to attend, although anyone involved in running branch diving and training, as well as those considering taking on these important roles, was welcome to attend.

The workshop provided support to Diving Officers (DOs) who have a crucial club role; to make things clearer, easier and to answer questions.

In attendance were members from Aberdeen, Chaumont, Chorley, Hartford, Just 4 Fun, Manchester University, Solway, Southport, Stafford Sub-Aqua Club, Sub C Divers, Golden Lion, Whiston and Prescot, and Wigan Scuba Divers.

Also at the event was Sophie Heptonstall, BSAC Head of Diving and Training who came along to listen and provide support.

Chorley DO workshop

Topics discussed on the evening included the North West Regional events for 2025, Skill Development Courses (SDCs), the role of the DO, their responsibilities, the support available from HQ and the region.

The get-together also gave DOs the chance to meet both the Technical Instructor team and the Seamanship Instructor team.

Compere Stephen Dorricott ran through frequently asked questions and scenarios commonly encountered by Diving Officers, and asked for feedback on how they should respond. Clubs were also asked about the main issues they are facing.

John Brennan, Diving Officer at Chaumont and one of the attendees said:

What a great meeting, again. Very informative, relevant subjects - well worth the drive and time. Thank you all.

Sophie Heptonstall added:

Thanks to Stephen, North West Regional Coach for getting the clubs together and the invite. The workshop gave an ideal opportunity for Stephen to update on Regional events scheduled for 2025, BSAC to update on current projects and crucially the opportunity for the clubs to feedback and discuss how to grow diving and snorkelling activities and share ideas. It was a really collaborative event.
