We’re so due a conference. I can’t wait and the line-up this year is looking spectacular! I hope as many members as possible can attend, it will be a fantastic opportunity to discuss the latest BSAC news and plans, listen to some top speakers, catch up with friends and make some new ones too.

A few things you can expect at this year’s conference…

Renowned environmental thought leader, Gaia Vince has been announced as a keynote speaker for this year’s event. Gaia is a science writer, broadcaster and Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Anthropocene Institute at UCL, and her award-winning work explores the interplay between human systems and the environment. In her conference talk – Living with oceans on a hotter world – Gaia will delve into the dramatic impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems.

Gaia said:

Over the coming decades, oceans will continue to absorb the extra heat from the atmosphere, owing to our greenhouse gas pollution. This is already having a dramatic impact on marine ecosystems, from dying reefs to storm battered coastal erosion, to Arctic ice melt and rising sea levels. Divers are some of the first people to observe and document these changes, and they are also some of the first responders on the forefront of repair. This talk will look at how we expect the world’s oceans to change, how that will impact people, and some of the ways we can combat the damage.

Also on the BSAC Diving Conference speaker stage:

Dan Orr – a world-renowned expert on diving safety, Dan will share his decades of insights in his talk - Mistakes divers make. Dan will also be running a breakout session on ‘Safety issues for the older diver’.

Tiffany Norberg – a specialist in Nordic cold water exploration, Tiffany will present on the extensive wreck exploration in the Baltic Sea, highlighting significant World War I and II wrecks in the Gulf of Finland.

Michelle Haywood - having spent the last 20 years running Discover Diving on the Isle of Man, Michelle’s’ talk ‘Revisiting the Mona’s Queen’ will discuss the history of the Mona’s Queen, its role in the Dunkirk evacuation, its sinking, and the 2023 dive expedition to its wreck.
