BSAC has launched a special project to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the scuttling of the interned German High Seas fleet at Scapa Flow at the end of the First World War.
The official anniversary is 21 June 2019, but this ambitious project aims to bring together divers throughout 2019 to support the Scapa 100 initiative, which is coordinating a cluster of projects and expeditions to mark the centenary.
The key aim of this BSAC project is to encourage BSAC divers to visit Scapa Flow throughout 2019 and dive the iconic wrecks and block ships, from both local hardboats and also club RIBs. By embracing the Scapa centenary, BSAC divers can also feed data into the Scapa 100 project, which is collating information for an online virtual library and also help to collect images of BSAC’s sponsored Scapa wreck, the Coln.
BSAC’s Expedition Officer, Andrew Hunt said that Scapa 100 will be a great opportunity for BSAC members to participate in some diving with a purpose.
Following on from the Jutland commemorations, this is a signifi cant anniversary for our maritime history and the chance to bring together a large number of divers to mark the occasion and learn about a period of history that has also departed living memory.
